I Saw a King | Ho Visto un Re
Director | Giorgia Farina

Presented by Brebnerprint

I Saw a King is reminiscent of Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit for its bold stylisation, whimsy, and bittersweet theme told through the eyes of a child.

A genuinely charming film that will appeal to all ages.

 2024 | 95 mins | Italy | Comedy, History | Italian with English subtitles

It’s 1936 and Mussolini’s Italy has invaded Ethiopia in its colonial fervour.

This incredible true story is set in a seaside town in a grand aristocratic estate, where young Emilio is more interested in his novels, populated with romanticised orientalist characters, than in nationalistic exploits.

His mother is an eccentric artist and his father is the overbearing, fascist mayor of the town. When a captured Ethiopian prince is imprisoned in an aviary on the family estate, Emilio imagines the exotic gentleman is a character form one of his novels. Against his father’s wishes, the two strike up a friendship.

In this clever and colourful coming-of-age film, Emilio will come to realise the true nature and absurdity of his world.
